INTRODUCTION

Internet-Accessible Library Catalogs and Databases is coauthored by Dr.
Art St. George of the University of New Mexico and Dr. Ron Larsen of
the University of Maryland. Dr. St. George says this document, began as
an effort to provide additional service to the network community
locally. However, it became apparent that the library resources were of
broader appeal than that.
    It contains a listing of over 100 online library catalogs and
databases available within the United States and beyond. It contains
listings of U.S. and international library catalogs and databases,
dial-up libraries, Campus-Wide Online Information Systems, and bulletin
board systems. Each listing gives a brief description of the resource
and instructions on how to access it, as well as places to contact for
more information. Listings include such material as Columbia
University's online library catalog (CLIO), Pennsylvanias State
University online card catalog system (PENpages), and the Colorado
Alliance of Research Libraries (CARL) and its 25 individual resource
listings of libraries and information databases, such as the Metro
Denver Facts database.
    This catalog is an ongoing project. If you have any suggestions,

Occidental Colleges Automated Library System (Oasys)

    The Occidental College library contains approximately 500,000
    volumes, and holds an extensive video library and subscribes to
    thousands of periodicals and government publications.

    In the fall of 1990, Oasys, the library catalog system, was
    installed. Its purpose is to easily guide users through the
    colleges extensive holdings, making the paper card catalog
    obsolete.

Instructions:
1. Oasys is reachable through the Internet, type telnet kitty.oxy.edu
2. Type oasys at the resource prompt
3. Type oasys again at the login prompt.

    You must be able to emulate a Vt-100 or Wyse-50 terminal in
    order to use Oasys. Oasys is open 24-hours per day, 7 days a

Description
    The MELVYL catalog is the online union catalog of monographs
    and serials (periodicals) held by the nine University of
    California campuses and affiliated libraries. The monograph
    database, which includes records for books and nonbook
    materials such as maps, films, musical scores, and sound
    recordings, contains over 5.5 million unique titles
    representing nearly 11 million holdings at UC, the California
    State Library, and the Center for Research Libraries.
    Collection strengths include agriculture, dry lands,
    oceanography, entomology, performing arts (especially film and
    television), photography, Californiana, materials on Mexico and
    Central America, 17th and 18th century British literature,
    health sciences, and science fiction.

    The periodicals file, which includes newspapers, journals,
    proceedings, etc., contains over 640,000 unique titles
    representing over 1.2 million holdings from UC, Stanford
    University, the University of Southern California, the
    19-campus California State University system, and selected
    other libraries.

    The MELVYL catalog also provides access to two databases of
    article citations: MEDLINE and Current Contents. The MELVYL
    MEDLINE database contains the current five-year file of the
    National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE database, which includes
    article citations and abstracts, indexed from over 4,000 health
    sciences journals. The Current Contents file, from the Institute
    for Scientific Information, contains one year of citations to
    articles in over 6,500 journals in seven broad subject
    disciplines. Use of these files, unlike the books and
        periodicals files, is restricted to the UC community.

    The "DLA Bulletin" and the "Mynd of the MELVYL Catalog," two
    publications describing the online catalog and its development
    and use, are also available online. The MELVYL catalog also
    provides access via TELNET to other remote library systems on
    the Internet.

Network Access
    The system is on the Internet and can be accessed using the
    host name melvyl.ucop.edu or any of four Internet addresses
    (31.1.0.1, 31.0.0.11, 31.0.0.13, 31.1.0.11).

Who Can Use the Catalog
    The MELVYL online catalog and periodicals file are universally
    available. Access to MEDLINE and Current Contents files are
    restricted under a license agreement to the University of
    California faculty, staff, and students.

    VT100 emulation is possible but not explicitly present. Logoff
    instructions are provided.  GLADIS is public access and it does
    not require a password for access. The catalog covers the
    holdings of most UCB libraries, including the main library, the
    Moftt Undergraduate Library, the Bancroft Library and some 23
    branch libraries. The catalog is complete for monographic
    holdings from 1977 to the present and incomplete for
    monographic holdings prior to that date. We are in the process
    of converting older monographic records, so more of these
    records appear in the catalog daily. All of the serial titles,
    both past and present, are reflected in GLADIS. GLADIS also
    contains records for maps, manuscripts, audiovisual materials
    and computer software. Circulation information (whether an item
    is checked out or not) is available for some library locations
    (six libraries as of September, 1989).

    This database contains records describing journals and their
    contents. Coverage is rapidly growing as CARL member holdings
    are processed. UnCover will soon include more than 10,000

    MAGAZINE INDEX contains current indexing for over 400 popular
    and general interest magazines. It covers current affairs,
    leisure and travel, consumer affairs and products, people in
    the news, education, arts, and science. Many of the articles
    covered are available for delivery either online or by
    telefacsimile.

DATABASE: TRADE & INDUSTRY INDEX (Copyright Information Access Company)
    TRADE & INDUSTRY INDEX is a comprehensive database covering all
    aspects of business and industry: companies, products, people,
    economics, management, technological innovations, and industry
    trends. Over 600 publications are included. Many are available
    for delivery, either online or by telefacsimile.

    This database contains the current journal holdings of the
    Boston Library Consortium, a cooperative association of
    academic and research libraries in the Greater Boston area.

    DATABASE: New Journal Issues
    Information about journal issues received the previous business
    day by some of the CARL libraries.

DATABASE: Conser
    The CONSER file is a subset of the authenticated MARC CONSER
        file.  It contains approximately 220,000 bibliographic records
        for serials that were coded c (current) in byte 6 of the 008
        field.  Update tapes containing new records and changes are
        processed monthly. The records are cataloged using the same
        indexing rules that are applied to the CARL bibliographic files.
        Libraries may access this file for downloading bibliographic
        records through CARL Serials Control.

DATABASE: Online Libraries
    ONLINE NEWSLETTER and ONLINE LIBRARIES AND MICROCOMPUTERS are
    full text publications that comprise the world's foremost news
    service in the Online and CD-ROM field. The print edition of
    these publications is distributed in over 70 countries. This
    database presents articles from Online Libraries and
    Microcomputers (9/83 to date), Online Newsletter (1980-81 and
    1988 to date), and Online Hotline (1982-1987). Published by

DATABASE: Encyclopedia
    The Academic American Encyclopedia, published by Grolier
    Electronic Publishing, Inc. is the equivalent of a 20 volume
    printed encyclopedia. It contains over 30,000 articles of
    general interest in the humanities, science and the social
    sciences, as well as information about sports and contemporary
    life. Many biographies are included and the information is
    updated regularly.

    Note: The encyclopedia is restricted to use by the patrons of
    certain of CARL's member libraries.

DATABASE: CHOICE : Current Reviews for College Libraries.
    The file includes reviews from September 1988 forward, supplied
    by the Association of College and Research Libraries. Data are
    copyright ACRL, and CARL thanks the Association for allowing us
    to use its records.

DATABASE: Environmental Education
    The Directory of Environmental Education Resources (DEER) is a
    joint project of the Colorado Alliance for Environmental
    Education and the Colorado Department of Education. DEER
    includes Colorado and regional agencies, organizations,
    companies, groups, and individuals who disseminate
    environmental education resources. Please contact the
    organizations listed for more information about their
    programs.

DATABASE: Metro Denver Facts
    METRO DENVER FACTS is a statistical summary of metropolitan
    Denver's growth and assets as a business location. The data is
    supplied by the Economic Development Group of the Greater
    Denver Chamber of Commerce, and is presented here as a project
    of the METRO DENVER NETWORK and CARL.

DATABASE: Internet Resource Guide
    The Internet Resource Guide - Copyright 1990 BBN Systems and
    Technologies Corp. - is compiled by the NSF Network Service
    Center ([e-mail]). Information on computational
    resources, library catalogs, archives, and other resources
    available via the Internet are supplied by members of the

    DELCAT.UDEL.EDU or DELCAT.ACS.UDEL.EDU.
    After you are connected to DELCAT, press the RETURN key to see
    a list of valid terminal types. You may have to press the
    RETURN key 2-3 times. If you have connected in line mode, use
    TYPETERM as your terminal type. If you are using a Sun
    workstation, use VT100 as your terminal type. You should also
    telnet to DELCAT from a "csh-tool" window. Do not telnet from a
    "cmd-tool" window. Otherwise, select the terminal type closest
        to the one you are using.

    In response to the ENTER TERMINAL TYPE: prompt, type your
    terminal type and press the RETURN key. Press the RETURN key
    again when the "Welcome to DELCAT" screen appears, and follow
        the directions as outlined on the resulting screen of
    instructions.

To exit:
    To log off DELCAT, type either QUIT or EXIT and press the
    RETURN key.

    Instructions follow for accessing the online library catalogs
    of Florida's State University System, brought to you courtesy of
    the Florida Center for Library Automation, Gainesville, Florida.

    The catalogs, called LUIS, use the NOTIS software marketed by
    NOTIS Systems, Inc. (Evanston, Ill.) The software resides on an
    IBM 3090-600 owned and operated by the Northeast Regional Data
    Center (NERDC) in Gainesville.

    There are actually nine LUIS catalogs, one for each university.
    For each library, the percentage of its collection searchable
    in LUIS is different and is always changing. To find out what a
    library's LUIS catalog covers, contact that library.

    The online catalog system is based on IBM DOBIS/Leuven
    software. The catalog contains the union catalog for 5 library
    units: General Libraries (Woodruff, Chandler, and Chemistry
    Libraries), Health Sciences Center Library, Law Library, Oxford
    College Library, and Theology Library.

    The online catalog database currently contains more than
    500,000 bibliographic records, representing approximately 40%
    of the total holdings. A retrospective conversion project has
    been started.

    The online catalog is located on host EMUVM1.CC.EMORY.EDU.
    TN3270 emulation is required.

Network Access
    After the VM screen is displayed, press ENTER (normally the
    return key) to get a CP READ. Type DIAL VTAM and press ENTER.
    At the VTAM screen, type LIB and press ENTER. When the CICS
    screen appears, press the PF1 key. The next screen will be the
    initial library systems screen. All references to pressing
    RETURN on the library screens mean to press the key which sends
    ENTER (normally the RETURN key). To exit, terminate the telnet
    connection.

    Context-sensitive help is available throughout the Online
    Public Access Catalog  with the PF2 key.  No account or
    password is required.

    keyword/Boolean searching, but does offer what we call "search
    qualication", the ability of a user to limit an author, title,
    or subject search result by any of several elements present in

    LCS is a short-record circulation system, with information

    easy through the LCSgated interface. Online help and

Dial-up Using a Microcomputer and Modem
    This feature may be employed by anyone using a microcomputer,
    modem, and communications software, whether from their home,
    office, dorm room, or from a library. To properly set the
    communications software to access the library computer and
    THOR, set your terminal (computer), modem and communications
    software for:

    You can dial-up to THOR with a variety of microcomputers and
    software. For whatever hardware and software combination you

    combination is an IBM PC compatible computer with VT100
    terminal emulation. For this combination these key combinations
    work:

After connecting to the computer, press <return> several times until
the system responds with the "DIAL": prompt.

Access from the Internet
    Users of any computer connected to the Internet (which includes
    most multi-user computers on campus) can connect directly to
    THOR without using a telephone line. Different combinations of
    computer hardware will connect in different ways, but some
    common types are discussed below. If none of these combinations
    seem to describe your situation, or neither method works, call
    the Library Systems Department ((317)-494-2857) for assistance.
    You might also get help from your local computer system
    administrator.

    From terminals connected to a UNIX computer:
        - log on to your UNIX account as usual
        - make sure the TERM environment variable is set
          correctly
        - type, "tn3270 lib.cc.purdue.edu" and press RETURN

    From terminals connected to the VM (IBM) computer:
        - log on to your VM account as usual
        - type, "telnet lib.cc.purdue.edu" and press ENTER

    From many off-campus computers on the Internet: - follow the
    appropriate set of instructions above - if "lib.cc.purdue.edu"
    does not work, use "128.210.9.8" instead.

    The system should display the THOR database selection menu. If
    anything else happens, or if the system prints numerous
    extraneous characters with the menu, disconnect and seek help.
    Once properly connected to THOR, you must know how to type the
    IBM <enter> and <clear> functions. Users already connected to
    an IBM system can use the same keys that they use for their own
    account. For UNIX users, these keys are set by their System
    Administrator for each terminal type. Frequently, <ctrl> and
    <j> will work for <enter>, and <ctrl> and <z> will perform a
    <clear>, but check with your System Administrator for the
    correct combinations.

    THOR is an on-line database of information about books,
    periodicals, and other materials in the Purdue University
    Libraries. All serials and books added to the Libraries after
    June 1976 can be found in THOR. Records for older books are
    continually being added.

    THOR is controlled through a set of single letter commands
    followed by an equal sign (=). Type the command, your search
    topic, and press the ENTER key. Upper and lower case are
    treated the same. For instructions on searching, type the
    search command without the equal sign. Example: "a" by itself
    gives instructions on author searching.

    Prior to searching, press the clear button until the THOR menu

    catalog (LITMSS). As of Nov. 1990, it consists of over 56,000

    LIBROS has all US Government Printing Office cataloging records
    since 1976. The US GPO records are updated monthly. LIBROS also
    contains cataloging records from New Mexico Institute of Mining

    Albuquerque.

    The system offers keyword, boolean search capability. In
    addition to author, title, and subject search commands, LIBROS
    offers an abstract index and retrieves all keywords from the
    abstract field. US GPO records and the City of Albuquerque
    Planning Library utilize the abstract field. The command and
    abstract is used to retrieve keywords from the abstract field.

    Most materials listed in LIBROS are available via interlibrary
    loan or individuals may contact the UNM Library's Document
    Delivery Service. The Document Delivery Service charges a
    minimum of $5.00 per request for mailing photocopies directly

    computer, CORNELLC, and includes records for approximately
    one-half of the five million volumes owned by the sixteen
    Cornell libraries. Most records are for materials acquired
    since 1973. However, records for many items acquired before
    1973 have been added to the online catalog, including most
    holdings of the Africana, Engineering, Entomology, Hotel, ILR,
    Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Veterinary libraries.

    The online catalog is usually available from 6:30 a.m. through
    4:00 a.m. However, due to computer maintenance requirements,
    the online catalog might not be available from 10:00 p.m.
    Saturday to noon Sunday, and from 10:00 p.m. to Midnight
    Sunday. The online catalog is most heavily used from 2:00 to
    4:00 p.m. weekdays and might be slow to respond during those
    hours.

Searching Josiah:
    The Josiah Search Menu supports searches by author, title,
    subject, and author/title combinations. Help is available at
    any point by pressing the PF1 key. PF key alternatives are also
    supported by typing PF1 (or PF3, PF5, etc.) after any ">>"
    prompt.

    The direct command language is a modified form of the language
    developed by the Western Library Network (WLN). Use of this
    Josiah option requires familiarity with the WLN command
    language. The direct command supports bibliographic file
        searches by author, title, subject, series, isbn/issn, and
        year of publication; authority file searches by author, subject,
        and series; and call number browse. Boolean and keyword are also
    available.

    The menu searches are programmed to execute the command
    language behind the scenes. Each menu search uses the text
    typed on the menu screen as the search key for a direct
    command. In addition, each menu search is programmed to try
    alternate search strategies in order to locate bibliographic
    records.

Logging off:
1. Press the PF10 key to display the Josiah logoff option and choose
   the option from the menu
2. Press the PF3 key
3. At the passthru menu, press the PA1 key

Accessing the Texas A&M Library System:
    VT100 emulation is possible but not explicitly present. Logoff
    instructions are provided.

    NOTIS at Texas A&M contains materials held by the Sterling C.
    Evans Library. NOTIS does not contain information about
    Government Documents or the holdings of the Medical Sciences
    Library. The following steps are used to access the Texas A&M
    Library:

1. Type SET HOST VENUS from a THENET node or telnet VENUS.TAMU.EDU from
   any machine connected to the Internet.
2. At the Username: prompt, type VTAM
3. At the Texas A&M Statewide Network screen, type NOTIS
4. At the CICS screen, hit <RETURN>

At this point, you are in NOTIS and can enter any command.

Title searches:         To search for a particular title, use the t=
                        search command followed by the title.

                  Example: t=foundation

Author searches:        To search for a particular author, use the a=
                        search command followed by the author's name.

                Example: a=asimov

Subject searches:       To search for a particular subject, use the s=
            search command followed by the subject.

            Example: s=tennis

Keyword searches: To search for a particular keyword, use the k= search
          command followed by a string.

            Example: k=cry wolf

          You may use the logical operator (AND, OR, NOT) and
              parenthesis to group the operators. Also, $ can be

Help:             On most NOTIS screens, help can be seen by the h
                  command.

    LUIS (Library User Information Service) at the University of
    Texas at Arlington contains materials held by the UT Arlington
    Library. To access LUIS, perform the following steps:

1. Type telnet ADMIN.ARL.UTEXAS.EDU from any machine connected to the
   Internet
2. As soon as you are connected, hit <RETURN>
3. At the TERMINAL TYPE prompt, type VT100
4. At the VTAM selection menu, type NOTIS
5. At the CICS Logo Screen, press <RETURN>
6. On the next screen, type LUUT

At this point, you are in LUIS and can enter any command.

Title searches:         To search for a particular title, use the t=
            search command followed by the title.

    The Online Catalog (UTCAT) for the University of Texas at
    Austin contains records for approximately 3.5 million items.
    This Online Catalog contains:

1. Most items found in the Perry-Castaneda Library (PCL)
2. Items in the Undergraduate library
3. Items in the Branch libraries
4. Items in the Asian Collection
5. Items in the Benson Latin American Collection
6. Some government documents, maps, sound recordings
7. Some microlm/microche sets

To access UTCAT from NT, just follow these steps:
1. Type SET HOST UTAUS from any THENET node, or telnet
   UTAUS.CC.UTEXAS.EDU from any host on the Internet
2. At the Username: prompt, enter UTCAT
3. Press 1 and the Keypad <ENTER> key at the UT Library Information
   Systems screen
4. At the Welcome to the UT Library Online Catalog screen, press the
   Keypad <ENTER> key

    Now you should be at the UT Library Online Catalog  Search
    Choices Menu. From this menu, you may type 1 or 2 letter search
    commands and the word(s) you want to search for. After your
    search command is typed in, hit the keypad ENTER key.

AUTHOR searches: To search for a particular author, you use the A
         (Author) search command followed by the author's name.

         Example: a mowat, farley

         To see the index of authors, you use the AI (Author
         Index) search command followed by the first author you
                 wish to see.

         Example: ai mowat, farley

TITLE searches:  To search for a particular title, you use the T
                 (Title) search command followed by the title of
           the book.

             Example: t never cry wolf

         To see the index of titles, you can use the TI (Title
         Index) search command followed by the rst title you
         wish to see.

         Example: ti never cry wolf

         To search for certain keywords in a title, you can use
         the TK (Title Keyword) search command.

         Example: tk wolf cry

SUBJECT searches:To search by subject, you can use the S (Subject)
         search command.

         Example: s wolves

    Also, from the Search Choices Menu, you can type 3 letter
    commands followed by Keypad Enter or their equivalent PF keys.

BACk (PF1)      To page back and review up to 10 screens of results.
REPeat (PF2)    To repeat the last search typed in.
INDex (PF3)     To move from brief or full records to the corresponding
        index.
EXPlain (PF4)   To view general information about the Online Catalog.
NEWs (PF5)      To view current information about Online Catalog
        developments.
HELp (PF6)      To see context sensitive help.
MENu (PF7)      To move from anywhere back to the Search Choices Menu.
STOp (PF8)      To exit from the Online Catalog.

    Finally, if a list of items is on the screen, you can type the
    number of the item you wish to see.

Exiting:
1. Type STOP followed by Keypad <ENTER>
2. Type 4 followed by Keypad <ENTER>

    The Old Dominion University Library holds over 1.6 million
    items in a variety of formats - microform, recordings,
    newspaper, periodical and book. The library is a selective
    depository of U. S. government publications and documents of
    the State of Virginia.

Access Instructions:
1.  telnet geac.lib.odu.edu and press <Enter>.

    After a short wait, you should see several messages, among them
    the following: telnet escape character is Control - ] This
    means that the connection has been established. Make a note of
    which character serves as your escape character. It differs
    from system to system. The escape character is useful for
    getting out of problem situations. Press <Enter> ONCE to get
    GEAC's attention. The GEAC catalogue then comes online. At the
    end of the session, type END or QUIT, or for CMS users type F4.
    While online, type HELP for help. Good luck!

    Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University runs VTLS.
    The VTLS system is connected to the outside world through the
    campus IBM ROLM CBX.

    Telephone access to the CBX is provided through an inbound
    modem pool at phone number [phone]. Speeds up to 2400
    baud are accepted. There is no charge at this time for dialing
    into the CBX.

    The CBX can be accessed via the Internet using: telnet
    128.173.5.4  Volunteer surveyors were unable to connect to this
    system.  After connecting to the CBX and getting the
    informative prompt, issue the command CALL VTLS to connect to
    the VTLS system running on the Librarys HP3000 Series 950
    computer.

FOOTNOTE ON 3270 EMULATION:

1. IF your host computer does NOT support full 3270 emulation, the VCU
computer will respond "Enter one of the following commands" and will
list only TWO commands: MSG and LOGOFF. In this case, type LOGOFF. Start
over by substituting the command "tn3270", instead of "telnet", i.e.,
type:

    TN3250 VCUVM1.VCU.EDU OR TN3250 128.172.001.066

If TN3270 is supported by your host, you will get the four choices,
including DIAL. Type DIAL VTAM. Follow the instructions above
continuing from the section: "Type the Letter L (for VCU Library
Catalog)"

2. If both the "telnet" and "tn3270" commands do not work properly, it
will not be possible at this time for you to use Internet to connect
to the VCU library catalog.

    MARQCAT is the union catalog of Marquette University Libraries
    - Memorial (social sciences and humanities), Science, and Law.
    It uses the INNOPAC software from Innovative Interfaces mounted
    on a DEC VAX 6310.

    After you have connected to MARQCAT, press <RETURN> <RETURN>
    for the login prompt, type "M" and press <RETURN> to see a list
    of valid terminal types. Specify your terminal type, conrm your
    terminal choice, and begin searching. A "QUIT" option is
        provided on the menu for logoff.

    NOTE: At this time you must be on a VT100 or TVI925 terminal or
    emulator to be able to access MARQCAT.

    The MARQCAT database currently contains almost 500,000
    bibliographic records, representing approximately 97% of the
    libraries' total holdings. Excluded as of this date are MU
    theses and dissertations submitted prior to 1981, and microform
    sets acquired prior to 1981.

University of Wisconsin Library Catalogs
Madison and Milwaukee Campuses Network Library System (NLS)
NLS.ADP.WISC.EDU

    The Network Library System (NLS) is the online public catalog
    of the libraries at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the
    University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. NLS supports separate online
    catalogs for each campus.

    The UW-Madison online catalog contains more than 1.7 million
    titles cataloged since 1976, located in 25 libraries on the
    campus and at the Center for Research Libraries in Chicago.
    This represents roughly 50% of the collections. The
    UW-Milwaukee catalog contains approximately 900,000 titles and
    represents 85% of the general collection.

Network Access:
    If available on your system, please use tn3270 (telnet
    supporting 3270 emulation) to access blue.adp.wisc.edu When
    connected you are presented a menu from which you select NLS1,
    the library catalog. (If you don't know how your function keys
    are mapped, TAB to the option you want and press ENTER.)

    Telnet access is also available via a gateway machine providing
    the necessary 3270 emulation. From your local host use telnet
    to access nls.adp.wisc.edu . You will be prompted to enter a
    terminal type. VT100 is the default, or you can enter the
    command list to display a list of supported terminal types.
    Upon entering a valid terminal type, select NLS1 from the menu
    displayed to connect to the library catalog.

    Upon entering NLS, a screen is displayed at which you either
    press ENTER to search the Madison catalog or type Mil and press
    ENTER to search the Milwaukee catalog.

    To exit, enter the command exit on any screen to return to the
    Main Menu. Here you select the option to quit. This returns
    control to your local host.

Who Can Use The Catalog:
    The University of Wisconsin library catalogs for the Madison
    and Milwaukee campuses are currently available to all
    interested parties.

Miscellaneous Information:
    Xterm users or other windowing software users must set their
    window size to 80 characters x 25 lines.

    For help using NLS or to obtain a free NLS Computer Catalog
    User's Guide, contact the Memorial Library Information Desk at

The Australian National University's Library catalogue is called URUCA.

Instructions:
1. telnet FACTS11.ANU.OZ.AU

    URICA requires VT100 emulation.  When access to the network has
    been obtained, the following will normally appear on your
    screen:

2. Type in URICA in response to this prompt.

    A URICA screen will appear. All URICA enquiries are menu
    driven.

    The URICA software is always logged on except from 5 p.m. on
    Fridays to 1 p.m. AEST on Saturdays when the system closes for
    maintenance.

Useful keys to know when searching URICA:
*  To get a help screen, press the backslash key "`"
*  To terminate a URICA search (but not to exit from the network),
   press the full stop key.
*  Enter #4 to go back to the main menu.
*  To disconnect send a break.

    The network will automatically disconnect a terminal which has
    not been used for 15 minutes.

Internet access to Deakin University Library (ALICE)
    Access to the Deakin University Library's online library system
    can be gained from any terminal which is connected to the
    INTERNET network.

    The Library's online system contains records for all items held
    in the Library, as well as items which are on-order. In
    addition, the on-line system also contains similar information
    on the holdings at the Gordon Technical College (GTC) Library.

    Instructions on the use of ALICE is given in the booklet "Guide
    to the Public Inquiry Terminals" available from the Library's

    NB Access can also be obtained by direct dial-in or by using
    X.25, details of which are available separately.

To gain access:
0 Terminal setup: no specific terminal settings required. Terminals
already connected to AARNet should not be altered.

4. The system will then indicate when ALICE was last used, display any
   "messages of the day", and then try to determine the type of terminal
   being used. If it cannot be determined automatically, the system will
   prompt you for the device type.

Type: <the code corresponding to your terminal type>. Some terminal
types are:- tatung Tatung VT-4100 vt100 DEC VT-100 vt52 VT-52 v3

        Press: <RETURN>

(If you don't know the terminal type, simply press <RETURN> and the
system will attempt to provide a reasonable format).

5. The system will try to establish a connection to the Library's
   computer. If the connection fails the system will respond with
   "Remote is busy". The system will then break the connection with
   your terminal, and you will need to restart from Step 1 to establish
   a new connection.

    If the connection is established, the system will respond
    with:-

        a) clearing the screen
        b) give instructions for starting and nishing an ALICE
                session i.e.

6. Type "Q" to start, <CR>~.<CR> to end.

    You can now start ALICE, and any subsequent commands will need
    to be ALICE commands. Usually, the appropriate ALICE commands
    are displayed at the bottom of the screen, but a user should
    consult the above- mentioned Guide before any serious use of
    the system.

To leave ALICE:
1. At any stage of a search within ALICE, you may leave it.

        Press: [RETURN]
        Type: ~. (i.e. tilde, dot) Press: [RETURN]

2. The system will immediately break the connection to the Library's
computer, and then break the connection between your terminal and the
system.

    The University of New Brunswick is pleased to announce that our
    online catalogue, known as PHOENIX, is now available over the
    Internet. We believe that we are the first Canadian library to
    make this capability available to off-campus users.

    To access PHOENIX, TN3270 to unbmvs1.csd.unb.ca (131.202.1.2).
    When the logon screen appears, TAB down to the "Application"
        field and enter "netlib" (without quotation marks) followed by a
    carriage return. The first PHOENIX screen will appear.

    To disconnect, use your TN3270 software to drop the connection.
    Or, from the PHOENIX command line, type Stop<cr>. A screen will
    appear giving further directions. Note: you should know what
    key is mapped to the CLEAR function. This will be different for
    each software package but Ctrl-Home may work.

    Access is restricted to three simultaneous users from the
    Internet.

    You will be logged out automatically after five minutes of
    inactivity or if your session exceeds thirty minutes.

    PHOENIX was a joint project by the library and UNB's Computing
    Services Department. It was developed in the period 1979-1980.

    PHOENIX searches can be done using either the Menu or Command
    modes. Initially, the user is placed in the Command Mode but
    can switch to Menu by typing Menu<cr>. Returning to Command
    Mode is accomplished by pressing the Pf3 key.

    Searching in Command is accomplished with the "s" command. Set
    results are shown through the use of the display command. The
    format is d set# format range. Typing d5l 1-5 would display
    records 1-5 of set number 5 in the long format. Formats
    available are (s)hort, (m)edium, (l)ong, (t)itle and x for
    MARC.

    Browsing of indexes is also possible in Command mode.

    PHOENIX consists of a number of databases. Most are full MARC
    format. The major exception to this is ENLIST. This database is
    maintained by the Engineering Library. Brief records are
    provided for all Engineering Library books, theses, pamphlets,
    microforms and some journal articles. In addition, some faculty
    members and special libraries within Fredericton maintain their
    collections using ENLIST. Browsing is not supported in ENLIST.

    The University of New Brunswick is one of Canada's oldest
    institutions of higher learning, with roots dating back to
    1785. It offers degrees in administration, arts, computer
    science, education, engineering, forestry, law, nursing,
    physical education and science. The Harriet Irving Library and
    the branches at Engineering, Education and Science and Forestry
    have a number of strengths which may be of interest to Internet
    users. We have a particularly strong collection in Canadian
    Maritime Provincial history, including Loyalist history. (Not
    all Loyalist materials are in PHOENIX. Send enquiries to

    The University also has a growing and vibrant campus in Saint
    John. Their library is called the Ward Chipman Library and its
    catalogue is searchable from PHOENIX by typing BEGIN WCL.
    Science Fiction fans may be interested in viewing their strong
    collection of this type of material.

    NOTIS site. We have Law, Health Sciences, Documents, and
    Education libraries included.

    To access QLINE through Internet, Onet, or any TCP/IP
    connection, a TN3270 connection is required (we only support
    TN3270 Protocol).

    Simply telnet QUCDNADM.QUEENSU.CA (130.15.125.20). This will
    take you directly into the main QLINE menu.

University of Saskatchewan Libraries

    The Libraries offer two online catalogue systems to users: Geac
    and InfoAccess. The Geac OPAC contains records for the main
    collection. The InfoAccess system offers access to several
    locally-created and commercially-produced bibliographic
    databases.

Main Catalogue (DBMS: Geac Library Information System)

    The Geac OPAC contains over 700,000 records.  All bibliographic
    and holdings data for monographs and serials in the main
    collection have been converted.

    Persons familiar with the Geac system can chain command from
    the first screen. If not, type <CAT> to get to the CHOOSE SEARCH
    screen.  Online help is available at every stage of the search.

    To disconnect, type <END> to return to the local telnet prompt.

INFOACCESS (DBMS: BUCAT, TKM Ltd.)

    The Infoaccess service consists of several locally-created and
    commercially-produced databases. Those ones presently available
    to non-University of Saskatchewan users are:

   underway)
2. Special Collections pamphlets (retrospective conversion project
   presently underway)
3. ERIC (RIE and CIJE), 1983 to present
4. Early Canadiana (database records for the Canadian Institute for
   Historical Microreproduction's micro-fiche collection of pre-1900
   Canadiana monographs)
5. Geac (a link is available to the Geac OPAC)

    Each database has online instructions for use and help screens.
    At any point in a search, you can type <M> or <MENU> to return
    to the Main Menu.

ISRAEL

InterUniversity Computerized Catalog System--ALEPH

    Access to the InterUniversity Computerized Catalog System,
    known as ALEPH (Automated Library Expandable Program - Hebrew
    university) is available via telnet.  ALEPH is a fully
    distributed catalog system, that is interconnected via DECNET.

    There are seven universities in Israel:

    Each university runs its own catalog system but all catalogs
    are interconnected via ALEPH and users can switch from one
    catalog system to another once they are inside the ALEPH

    POLYDOS.UNI-KONSTANZ.DE is the machine of Univ. Konstan'z
    library, running KOALA, a proprietary online cataloging/database
        software.

    KOALA may be used to scan the library's inventory of about 1.4
    million volumes (no journals yet) for a given volume, using
    (combinations of) about a dozen different search criteria, such
    as ISBN, ISSN, author's names, title etc.

    The user interface is TTY-like and KEPT ENTIRELY IN GERMAN. It
    features an online help system, and a rudimentary message
    handling facility to contact the database managers.

    KOALA can be reached via telnet to polydos.uni-konstanz.de
    (134.34.3.5), on ***PORT 775***, during library opening hours
    (8:00 to 21:30 local time on Mon to Fri, 9:00 to 19:00 local
    time on Sat.).

    There are a few technical limitations to using KOALA: - the
    machine is quite slow (and suffers from overload) - the number
    of KOALA sessions running in parallel is limited (currently to
    9)

    The ITESM System is formed by 26 campuses in 22 different
    cities all over Mexico. The information included in the online
    catalog is just from the Monterrey Campus but by the end of
    this year it should include the information from the whole
    system.

    Library's online catalog may be accessed by other academic
    institutions via Internet. Library's Telenet is:
    bibes.pue.udlap.mx (140.148.1.5). To access the online catalog
    do the following steps:

1. Type <set host bibes> from a DECNET node. If you are not in a
   DECNET, telnet from any machine connected to Internet to the
   following address: bibes.pue.udlap.mx (140.148.1.5).

2. System prompts username:, type <LIBRARY> (no password required).

Please note: requirements VT100 or VT100 emulation.

    At this point the inquiry screen presents you with several
    search types. From this list you may select a search by author,
    title, subject or any other combination. (All the time there is
    online help.)

    Once you have selected the search type, enter the search
    term(s). Search term(s) may be partial words or phrase(s).

    Example: If the search type was "Title", a search term would
        be a word or phrase that is known to exist in the title you
        wish to retrieve.

    The online catalog may be accessed Monday through Friday: 8:00
    a.m. - 10:00 p.m., and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
    However, due to computer maintenance requirements it may not be
    available from 3:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. on Friday.

    On weekdays the online catalog is most heavily used from 8:00
    a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

    All titles acquired after October, 1988 form part of our online
    catalog. Actually 65,000 records are online, this represents
    37% of our library collections.

    Our online catalog also includes the collection of Mexican
    Government Publications.

SYSTEM: Massachusetts Institute of Technology BARTON. COVERAGE:
Includes all material acquired since 1974 except for periodical
articles, maps, pamphlets and non-MIT technical reports. Some pre-1974
publications are included. ACCESS: 617-258-6700 (1200 baud). 8N1.
LOGON: Hit enter a couple of times. Uses same software as LOUIS at
Brandeis. To log off, type "end". SEARCH: ? HELP: Call [phone] or
253-1617 for connection problems, [phone] for other questions.

SYSTEM: Tufts University TULIPS. COVERAGE: Catalogs 300,000 books,
25,000 serials. Older publications and most government documents not
included ACCESS: 617-381-3812 (1200 baud); 381-3824 (2400 baud). 8N1.
If you do not support VT100 or VT220 emulation directly your screen
will begin to flash and seem to go berserk. Wait until it stops, then
type "??" (yes, two of them) and you will get a help screen. LOGON: At
enter "selection prompt", hit L and then enter. For "username", type
"TULIPS" and hit enter. It takes a few moments for the system to
connect.  SEARCH: Uses more complicated search system than other
catalogs, so read directions carefully HELP: (617) 381-334.

SYSTEM: Wellesley College INNOPAC. COVERAGE: Covers 350,000 books,
8,000 magazines. Does not include government documents ACCESS:

SYSTEM: University of Massachusetts at Boston ULYSIS. COVERAGE:
Catalogs all of the library's books and periodicals and some government
documents and maps ACCESS: 617-265-3598 or 265-0393 (300 or 1200 baud);
265-0883 or 265-9882 (2400 baud). 7E1. LOGON: At "enter service" prompt,
type "server" and hit enter three or four times. At "server" prompt,

The New York Public Library has dial-up access to its CATNYP online
card catalog, containing all their entries since January 1972. The
phone number is [phone] for 2400 baud access. Here are the basic
help screens:

To use CATNYP, type what you want CATNYP to do. Use one of the words,
or "commands", that CATNYP understands. Some of the more frequently used
commands are explained below. For a complete list of commands, type
HELP COMMAND:

To start a search, type the command FIND, then what you want CATNYP to
find; for example, FIND SUBJECT DANCE, or FIND AUTHOR KRAUS, or FIND
TITLE BOAT PEOPLE. For more information on the command FIND, type HELP
FIND.

If CATNYP tells you that some items were found as a result of your
search, you may type DISPLAY to see the items. There are actually four
different types of display you may use. For more information, type HELP
DISPLAY.

At any time, if you are having trouble or want more information, you
may type HELP and receive an explanation. For more information on the
HELP command itself, type HELP HELP.

To stop using CATNYP at any time, type STOP or END or QUIT or LOGOFF.

Always remember to press the RETURN key after you type a command.

To look for an item by author and title, type FIND AUTHOR, the author,
AND TITLE, then the title; for example, FIND AUTHOR GRANT AND TITLE
BOAT PEOPLE.

After you have typed one of these commands, press the key marked
RETURN.

Instructions to CATNYP are called commands. Examples of commands are:

After you have typed a command, press the key marked RETURN. CATNYP
will then search the catalog and report how many items it finds.

If you make a mistake in typing, press the key marked BACKSPACE to
backspace over the mistake, then re-type.

Always press the key marked RETURN when you finish typing.

SYSTEM: University of Kansas OCAT. COVERAGE: At least 25 percent of KU's
holdings, especially items acquired since 1975. (The 25 percent figure

VT100, IBM3101, and HDCPY (hard copy, i.e. dumb ASCII) and other
emulations. It is possible to access either catalog from either number.
LOGON: No formal logon. Upon connecting, enter terminal type, then
